Description

The Kerrytown BookFest celebrates all aspects of book writing and creation. This year, this annual exhibit at the Library showcases entries from the Bookfest’s 7th annual Book Cover Design contest for high school students.

he contest, which was open to all Michigan High School students and was sponsored in part by the Michigan Humanities Council, asked the students to re-imagine a cover for a chosen book and give a visual interpretation of the written word. This year’s book was Paddle-to-the-Sea, a Caldecott medal winning book by Holling C. Holling.

Three judges then evaluated the work, submitted by students from Crystal Westfield’s graphic design classes at Pioneer High School; Keith Raynor’s class at Lakeview High School; and Elizabeth Miller-Wallau’s class in East Grand Rapids. Over 80 entries were judged by Christopher Raschka, a two time Caldecott medallist (A Ball for Daisy); Nancy Shaw, a children’s author (Sheep in a Jeep); and Cecily Donnelly, a painter, graphic designer and illustrator.

Eight finalists were chosen representing work submitted by each school on the basis of originality, execution, and understanding and application of the subject matter. A Pre Reception and Exhibition Opening is scheduled for September 5 at 7 pm.
