Local Focus submitted by Meginator on July 31, 2023, 1:42pm This book offers general information about gardening with plants native to Michigan, accompanied by an extensive (and illustrated) list of such plants detailing their native habitats, their general properties, and their needs. The front matter is incredibly useful for anyone who is considering incorporating more native flora into their gardens or yards, with a helpful local focus and information about everything from defining “native plants” in the first place to cultivating rich soil that has been deeply affected by decades of human imposition and intervention. Steiner’s approach is eminently practical, and she encourages readers to seek out improvement rather than perfection by pointing out a range of nonnative plants that are relatively benign and can coexist happily with native plants; the goal is to do better, not to go completely back to the 19th century. I recommend this for anyone who is interested in rethinking their plant habits; the reference section is worth perusing for anyone planning any local gardening at all.
