Summer Symphony tunes up for debut

The Ann Arbor Summer Symphony, Jon Krueger conductor, opens its six-concert season this week with a concert Wednesday at the Jane Tasch Theater in Pinckney.

For Wednesday’s concert and also for the Summer Symphony’s July 3 concert at the Power Center, the special guest will be Eastern Michigan University Professor of Music Joseph Gurt, who will present Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, accompanied by the orchestra on a grand piano supplied by King’s Keyboard House of Ann Arbor.

On July 13 and 14, the Summer Symphony will present its traditional “Pops” concert featuring the exotic “Capriccio Espagnol” of Rimsky-Korsakov, among many other orchetral favorites.

The season finale concert arrives Aug. 8 and repeats Aug. 11 when bass vocalist John L. Henkel offers Vaughan-Williams’ romantic “Songs of Travel.” Also on the program is Gustav Holst’s stirring “The Planets.”

June 27, 8 p.m. - Jane Tasch Theater, Pinckney, with pianist Joseph Gurt.

July 3, 8 p.m. - Power Center, 121 Fletcher St., with pianist Joseph Gurt.

July 13, 4 p.m. - Van Buren Park Bandshell, Belleville, “Pops” concert.

July 14, 3 p.m. - Gallup Park, “Pops” concert.

August 8, 7:30 p.m. - West Park Bandshell, with bass John L. Henkel.

Aug. 11,4 p.m. - Pease Auditorium, Ypsilanti, with bass John L. Henkel.
